US Product Development Counsel - JD Required, P&C Insurer - Fully remote!
Our client, a dynamic excess and surplus P&C insurer, is seeking an exceptional candidate to support its US legal and underwriting teams. Core responsibilities will include collaborating with underwriting and claims teams to develop and maintain sophisticated insurance products, assisting with drafting and amending policy forms, and liaising with the companies regulatory compliance and operations functions. This role reports to the Associate General Counsel.
Principal Responsibilities:
- Draft P&C insurance forms and endorsements to support new and existing products that meet industry developments and trends. Compare and analyse bureau and competitor insurance policies, drafting and/or adapting Language to offer competitive, best-in-class products in support of deliberative underwriting strategies. Catalogue, maintain, and manage all forms to ensure version control and appropriate approvals are obtained.
- Under the supervision of the Associate General Counsel, perform legal and regulatory research to support business unit's needs and ensure product compliance. Coordinate special projects to support strategic goals, as needed.
- Maintain a broad-based understanding of multiple commercial policy types and product lines. Remain apprised of U.S. case law, regulations, legal trends, and emerging issues affecting insurance and reinsurance coverage matters.
- Assist with the drafting, review, and revision of reinsurance forms and contracts.
Other responsibilities to be determined at a later date based on individual performance and company requirements.
Job Requirements:
- Bachelor's Degree mandatory.
- A Juris Doctor degree mandatory.
- A CPCU designation would be a plus.
Candidates are more likely to be successful if they exhibit a majority of the following characteristics:
- Ideally: 5-8 years of specific experience with contract/product drafting and development while employed by a licensed insurance company. Alternatively: a licensed attorney with at least 5 years of experience with commercial coverage disputes, commercial claim handling, or general commercial contract drafting; or a non-attorney with at least 5 years of experience with adjusting complex commercial claims (including general liability, first party property, inland marine, and professional liability) for a licensed insurance company, MGA, or TPA.
- Experience developing and implementing commercial insurance products and programs - ideally, including both bureau (ISO) and proprietary products for authorized and surplus lines.
- High levels of personal initiative and confidence to work autonomously. Superior interpersonal, communication, and time management skills. The ability to develop and foster relationships with key internal and external stakeholders and to contribute in a dynamic, fast-paced environment and effectively deliver on multiple priority matters.
- Strong command of ISO Commercial Lines, ISO Manuals/Circulars, and regulatory concepts. Comfort with the supervised use of legal or regulatory research tools and resources.
- Excellent research, detail orientation, creative problem solving and project management skills. Proficiency in enhancing existing processes and feedback loops.
