Position Overview:
We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Product Counsel to join our legal team with a focus on drafting and developing insurance products for the admitted market. This is an excellent opportunity for a commercially aware, junior-level attorney to work closely with senior legal, underwriting, and compliance teams to support the creation, review, and filing of compliant insurance products across multiple U.S. jurisdictions.
Key Responsibilities:
- Draft and review policy language, endorsements, declarations, and related insurance documents for admitted products (e.g., P&C, commercial lines, specialty lines).
- Assist in ensuring insurance products comply with state insurance laws and regulatory requirements.
- Coordinate and support filings through SERFF and manage responses to DOI objections in collaboration with compliance and regulatory teams.
- Conduct legal research on statutory and regulatory requirements related to product development and updates.
- Collaborate with underwriting, actuarial, product, and regulatory teams to develop innovative and competitive insurance offerings.
- Assist in updating and maintaining template policies and coverage forms to align with evolving market and regulatory standards.
- Support internal training and guidance around policy wording and regulatory expectations in the admitted space.
Qualifications:
- Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school and admission to at least one U.S. state bar (preferably in one of our office locations).
- Minimum of 3 years of relevant legal experience, ideally within an insurance company, and previous law firm, MGA, or regulatory agency would be preferred.
- Familiarity with insurance product drafting, especially for admitted products; prior exposure to P&C lines strongly preferred.
- Working knowledge of state insurance regulations, filing processes, and compliance protocols in the admitted market.
- Strong legal drafting and analytical skills with attention to detail and clarity in written communications.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams and manage multiple priorities in a deadline-driven environment.
Desirable:
- Experience with SERFF filings and/or dealing directly with state insurance departments.
- Exposure to emerging product areas (e.g., cyber, climate-related risk).
- Interest in regulatory trends, policy innovation, and insurance modernization.
