Senior Claims Attorney

Reports to: Vice President - Claims

Basic Function: The Senior Claims Attorney is responsible for supporting clients claims operations and in the administration of claim notices, establishment and management of claim reserves, investigation, administration and resolution of complex claims, and reporting of claims to clients reinsurers. The lines of business are primarily Excess Casualty but can include a subset of D&O, Fidelity and Cyber.

General Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Direct management of complex claims.
  • Establish expense and/or indemnity payments when appropriate,
  • Work to resolve and close all claim files.
  • Coordinate with Finance to ensure efficient management of cash flow needs for claim payments.
  • Regularly report to and update reinsurers on claim developments.
  • Participate in refinement of claims operations, including development of methods that will assist in analytics.
  • As needed, oversee the receipt and acknowledgement of notice of claims, in conjunction with the Claims Attorneys and Claims Administrative Assistant.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Participate in management of First Notice of Loss processes.
  • Bring your ideas to improve efficiencies and develop methods to improve analytics.
  • Participate in yearly review of panel counsel performance and work with support staff to establish any billing or compliance issues that need to be addressed during annual reviews..
  • Adjust expense and indemnity reserves when necessary.
  • Manage invoicing from third parties engaged to assist in the administration of claims, including but not limited to law firms, adjusters, and consultants.
  • Prepare appropriate documentation of claim payments.

  • Work with Vice President, CCO - Claims to update guidelines periodically.
  • Assist Vice President, CCO - Claims with quarterly reports to Claims Committee/Board.
  • Participate in presentations to Membership.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly and annual reports for claims activity.
  • Support reporting to reinsurers for ceded claims, and recovery of any reinsurance recoverables due EIM. Train Claims Attorneys to coordinate reinsurance audits.

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Juris Doctor degree with an active state bar license in good standing.
  • 7+ years of in-house Claims Attorney or equivalent position in an insurance company.
  • Litigation experience practicing at a law firm specializing in insurance defense.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, Member Companies and business partners.
  • Customer focus, with experience in client satisfaction.
  • Understanding of and/or proficiency in information technology. Performance Measures
